I have a very special place in my heart for ‘my’ newborns – kids I’ve been photographing since birth – it is such a privilege being able to watch them grow and change, burst with personalities, learn to crawl and walk, talk and read. I’ve been photographing this guy over over two years now and every time I see him, he seems to grow and change – yet I can still make out that newborn baby boy I saw when I first met him for his newborn pictures. We always do a family session for these guys but for this photoshoot Mom had a different idea – and to be honest I did not really ‘get’ it at first. She wanted to split the photoshoot in two parts – first one of E. with his Dad and second part of E with his Mom. We did exactly that and it turned out pretty great – this Mom DID know what she was doing. I loved being able to capture different relationships and dynamics he had with his Dad and his Mom and different things he did with them. We started at a park in Franklin Lakes, which this family joking calls ‘E.’s park’ because there is never anyone there but them – and it was all ‘boy stuff’ – running, climbing, playing ball and riding his motorcycle’. And then we headed over to Abma farm in Wyckoff for some donuts (any photoshoot that includes donuts gotta be pretty great, don’t you think?!) and a visit to a petting zoo. There was hardly any posing – just a happy kid having the best time with his parents – and I was there to document all of it.
